Throughout the 1990s the cornfields of southern England have been the location for mysterious patterns in the crops. One of the earliest of the elaborate designs was this one at Alton Barnes, which appeared in July 1990.

Some of the crop circle designs have apparently been too complex to have been made by human creators without them being caught in the act. This 1996 formation at Windmill Hill, Avebury, is particularly impressive. Is this landscape art made by skilful humans or alien forces?
